Ice-Out Fishing in Maine

West Grand Lake is home to the original Grand Lake Canoes – 20 foot feet long with a square stern to accommodate a small outboard – built by hand from local cedar trees and designed to handle unpredictable weather on our large lakes.

When the ice melts on West Grand in late April, the salmon and lake trout rise to the surface and feed aggressively for several weeks on smelt. Trolling streamer flies and spoons from a Grand Laker can provide non-stop action for these highly sought after game fish. Combined with a hot shore lunch with broiled salmon, guide coffee, roasted chicken, potatoes and onions – early season salmon fishing at ice-out will create lasting memories and great stories.
